5 Red Flags Your Headache Needs Medical Attention

Advanced Brain and Spine Surgical Centre’s Dr Sein shares expert insight on when headaches signal something more serious

Dr Sein Lwin, Head of Neurosurgery at Advanced Neuro & Spine Centre (a member of Beyond Medical Group), was recently featured in Shin Min Daily News on 25 August 2026 (Tuesday), in an article titled “5大危险 头痛警讯” (“5 Major Danger Signs: Headache Warning Signs”), published as part of the paper’s 活得好 (Live Well) health series.

About the Feature

Headaches are one of the most common complaints people experience, and in most cases they’re harmless. But as Dr Sein explains in the article, some headaches can be an early warning sign of a more serious underlying condition, which is why knowing when to seek medical attention matters.

In the piece, Dr Sein breaks down the difference between everyday tension type headaches and migraines. The former is often linked to stress, fatigue, or prolonged screen use, while the latter typically presents as a throbbing pain accompanied by light sensitivity or nausea. While these common headaches are usually manageable with rest, hydration, or medication, Dr Sein highlights several red flag symptoms that warrant prompt medical evaluation, including:

  • A sudden, severe headache unlike any experienced before
  • Headaches that don’t improve after taking usual medication
  • Headaches accompanied by vomiting, weakness, confusion, or vision changes
  • Headaches that progressively worsen over time
  • Headaches accompanied by neurological symptoms such as weakness, slurred speech, or loss of consciousness

These symptoms may point to conditions affecting the brain, such as bleeding, blood clots, tumours, or raised intracranial pressure, which can impair normal brain function if left unassessed.

Dr Sein emphasises that early evaluation is key to determining whether further investigation is needed, giving patients the best chance at timely, appropriate treatment.

Why This Matters

Most people brush off a headache as “just a headache.” Dr Sein’s message is simple: pay attention when the pattern changes. If your headaches suddenly become more frequent, more intense, or come with symptoms you haven’t experienced before, it’s worth getting checked rather than waiting it out.
